#7 Diving the Great Barrier Reef

Born in the French country and mountains, true girl from the land, who could imagine that I would one day learn to scuba dive…and on top of that learning in one of the best places in the world: Australia: on the Great Barrier Reef!!!

Big challenge and impressive adventure for me this week: 5 days to learn and get PADI “Open Water” certified! Have to admit that I’m a bit worried about this whole new experience…

Flynn Reef / Milln Reef

Let’s take the plunge with Pro Dive Cairns, 5 star dive - and Australia’s premier PADI dive centre, reassured to be in good hands!

Before meeting Nemo and friends, first mandatory steps in the pool to learn the basics of breathing underwater and talking with hands. Max is happy, he will have a break as I am so talkative!!

The Big Adventure

My 3 day/2 night live aboard trip was full-on with only good stuff:

> 9 exceptional dives in 5 different sites

> Excitement of exploring the magic beauty of the Great Barrier Reef

> The satisfaction of getting more confident underwater thanks to wonderful and patient instructors

> Chill out time enjoying the perfect Australian weather

> Meeting nice people from all around the world who share the same passion

> And to not to forget the delicious food cooked by Astrid, come all the way from Germany to bake exquisite cakes and meals!

I just loved it all!! Just back and already wondering when will be the next dive trip! I’m a certified diver now, a new world with endless possibilities is now open to explore!

Thank you PRO DIVE Cairns, thank you Best Job in the World!

The big adventure truly begins once we get onboard ofthe Pro Dive Boat, meet all the crew and other passengers, drive to the reef, put on the gear and finally plunge into the pristine clear water!!!!!!!!! This is it, the moment I was so excited about. The big show starts now: welcome to the Great Barrier Reef’s Giant Aquarium!! I don’t exactly know where to look at as I’m surrounded by curious colorful fish, multicolor massive corals…until a cool green sea turtle shows up and says hello to me! Waouhh this is so exciting! Finding Nemo, of course, let’s go deeper and look for him and his little family. Since the movie, he has become a real reef star! His tiny babies are just so adorable!!!!!

All this emotion makes me forget that I’m not a fish yet and it’s time to go up! But the good news is this is just the beginning of the trip! Many other dives will follow and who knows who I’m gonna meet then! Surprise…! Speaking of which, one of the biggest surprises was to go for a night dive…I didn’t know this was even possible J! Trying to stay calm, I followed the group: “this is going to be your most relaxing dive ever!” The instructor told us…was not really convinced but this was actually an unforgettable experience! Plunging in the black water, swimming peacefully on line following the torches of your fellow divers, not knowing what is around you…Each coral corner is full of surprises…we saw Brian the giant (huge) and very old turtle sleeping below a rock! And unfortunately we didn’t come across a shark. Too scared of us, crazy bubbling humans, reef sharks escape and wait for us to go to sleep before coming back and hunt for the night…
